The Montenegro region is known for manufacturing top quality wine with a distinctive aroma, intensive dark color, a high percentage of alcohol (12% - 15%), and high concentration of extract, making the taste sharp for new wines, but complex and harmonious once they’ve aged. The famous “Vranac” (Stallion) takes first place, a brand protected by law, followed by other wines such as Crmničko Crno, Kratošija, Plavac and others. In the category of white wines, Krstač is the most well known. Areas with good conditions for raising wine grapes are part of one wine-growing region, with two main vineyards: Podgorica’s, which also includes the Ćemovsko field located in the basin of Lake Skadar, and Montenegrin-Littoral vineyard which stretches out along a narrow band from Sutorina to Bojana with vineyards mainly located in Ulcinj, Sutomore and Grbalj field.

In the Montenegrin wine-growing region red wine varieties of grape are predominant. The most prevalent variety is the autochthonous variety Vranac, grown combined with the Kratošija variety, as well as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The varieties used for red table wines include Kadarun and Plavka, and quality white wines are produced in small batches using varieties such as Krstač, Žižak, Muškacele, Chardonnay and others.

The climate and the tourist demand for wines provide incentive for growing table wine varieties that mature different seasons.
